Maybe you remember those days when you were a kid and one of the very first things your Mom taught you, was how to gather your books after reading them and arranging them in the Wood Bookshelves your Dad bought for you as a birthday gift. That bookcase is still in use today, as a bookcase now for your own kids. Your wife got it from your old house, when your Mom asked her to have it hauled to your own house now, with the suggestion that your wife use it for her grandchildren's use.
Your Mom apparently loves to see the old kids bookcase still in use and serves as a sentimental reminder for her every time she comes to visit during the weekend. You know how the mothers, especially of your Mom's generation, adored their kids, and now she continuously recalls the days when she was raising you as a young boy.
This topic of your boyhood is one matter she and your wife now talk about almost endlessly when she is around during the weekend. She even recalls vividly how she had a hard time teaching you on how to arrange your books then in the bookcases for kids that is now in your own house where your wife stores the books of your own children. Your wife seems to enjoy too all the tales your Mom has about you as a naughty young boy years ago.
Good that your Dad then had the foresight of buying a bookcase that was made of metal instead of wood. The durable metal material used to make the old bookcases has ensured the long life of your bookcase then. Had it been made of wood material, perhaps it would have been long gone, as the termites would have eaten it up over the years.
Your Mom now has the kids bookshelf as a lasting reminder for her of your years as a kid, something she always love to talk about with your wife and even with her grandchildren now. Your kids too relish hearing the stories of Grandma about their dad, asking their Grandma so many questions, curious and inquisitive as children always are.
This situation could be a little disadvantageous to you though, because every time you try to discipline your little boy he reminds you that Grandma has told him that you were as naughty before when you were a kid. You may not be able to go beyond that, knowing how your Mom has been detailing your own boyhood to the kids, as they sit around her in the porch regaling on the funny little stories she has about you.
Now, do not be nasty, give your Mom all the time to talk to your kids about your boyhood. That old bookcases furniture in the corner of your house is just bringing back all the years she had with you as a little boy. Maybe when you will be an old grandpa yourself in the future, you will also be reminiscing on things about that old bookcase.
Knowing the value of the books that were in that bookcases and shelves and their impact on your life, no one can really stop you from reminiscing about them later. |
